This is the first of a short series of videos on YouTube of Ira Glass, the host of This American Life, talking about key building blocks of story.

I’m very excited to see This American [Life] Live tomorrow night.

The Temp.

Tonight, I attended at talk at UCLA by B.J. Novak.  You might know him as “Ryan the Temp” turned “Ryan the Corporate Boss” turned “Ryan the Cokehead” on The Office.

If I had to pick someone in showbizz today that I’d want to model myself after, Novak would be at the top of my list.  He writes and acts on a great comedy show with a team of great writers and actors.  He came up through the ranks by grinding bad jokes into good ones on open mic stages.  And he was on Punk’d before all of the fake quitting.

Okay.  So, two out of three isn’t bad.

I’ve also been thinking about taking a temp job to make ends meet here in LA, so maybe I could model my life after Novak’s fiction presence.  Anyone know a good coke dealing hobbit in New York City?

Job Opening

johnnyrichardson:

rickyv:

Are you smart and motivated and good at keeping your shit together? Are you pretty good with numbers? Are you fun? I might have a job for you at CV [Connected Ventures]. E-mail me your resume and a photo of you doing something you enjoy doing.

How bad do I wish I lived in New York?

I am none of those things, but I would also like to work at Connected Ventures.

alectheviking:

“Tumblin that sh*t” is pretty hard when the quoter (and computer holder) is in KY.

Sincerely,

Man vs Ants

Question.  Do ants have the mental and/or psychological capability to learn behavior?  I am hoping yes, but hypothesising no.

I woke up this afternoon to find a bevy of them had advanced on my desk.  I took the standard procedure when dealing with ants [crushed them] and traced their comings and goings to a specific path coming from the door.  I disrupted the path and as the ants scattered I thought that my point had been made.  [Don’t come on my desk or I will crush you with a Post It note.]

Fifteen minutes later, the ants have once again begun their march to [and up onto] my desk.  Again, I beat them back.  Now, I am wondering if they will learn from the destruction of their fellow kind and retreat from the desk permanently.  I am guessing that if empty Code Red can are involved, the answer will be no.

Related question.  Have ants been known to disrupt electronic devices?  Such as a computer. I am worried they may know how to defeat me.

Glennz Tees  These shirts are amazing.  Clever jokes, well illustrated.  I’d buy one if I could afford it.  And I’d download it illegally if it was music.

This is for Brian, who has [had] no idea what Hancock is about.

When I asked what Hancock was last night, I was greeted with an almost disgusted, “WHAT?  You don’t know what Hancock is?!?!”

And now, thanks to the [post]modern marvels of Tumblr and Youtube, Will Smith’s new Fourth of July blockbuster about a new kind of irreverant superhero is no longer a mystery to me.
